Here's to the first Bandcamp plunder this year! I spent about an hour pilfering through looking for something that sounded good and finally stumbled upon these guys' ep that sort of breaks my ep rule, but it's too good to pass up.
The album is called World Of Augury and it's by a technical metal band called Covenants. Covenants is currently unsigned, but they've toured with the likes of Volumes and Elitest, so they are getting some recognition pretty quickly, considering they aren't yet a year old. They seem to draw influence from a lot of different places, technical death metal, djent, and deathcore being pretty prevalent.
Anyhow, onto the ep right?
I suppose I should start off with what people might consider bad, although bad might be the wrong word, it might just not be someone's taste. There's plenty of djenty guitars to be found here, so if you for some reason hate djent, you probably want to look elsewhere, but even if you do you might want to give these guys a shot anyways, because it's not your run of the mill djent band.
Being that it's an ep, one expects it to be relatively short, and being that this album only has three full songs, the first is more an intro, (a technical and awesome intro, but too short to really count as a full song in my opinion) you are left wanting more. In a good way.
These guys are definitely skilled instrumentalists, and the vocals are great too, although there are no vocals on the last song, which means there are only two songs with vocals. Djent haters criticize djent for being samey chug fests solely focused on the guitars, so it's nice to see a band adding focus to other instruments in the band.
The ep is free and awesome. So you can't really complain about it. I have high hopes for these guys and will definitely keep them on my radar. According to their facebook they are back in the studio as of a few days ago, I'm not sure if it's for a full length or for another ep, but either way it's good to hear that they are working on more stuff.
If you want to hear World Of Augury go to their bandcamp, and while your listening give them a like on facebook.
Look for more on their new stuff soon!
